We have to "play to survive" environmental disaster - not by consuming resources and chasing false promises (advertising) but by focusing upon what makes humans happy, healthy, safe and without fear. This blog is about doing this in our life.

I am in Shetland and keenly interested in more primitive living skills, particularly in the face of peak oil and climate change. I think that learning to live more wholely within our bioregion is essential.

Sorry mister, but when you are eating fruits and bananas, they're full of sugars...

So I would include no fruit in this if you really want to go without sugar...

Hello Malcolm,
I've only just stumbled onto your web presence through starting to investigate Orkney. I am a descendent of Isabella Tait, b. 1840, daughter of Thomas Tait and Isabell Pottinger, in Deerness. I believe the family lived on Holland farm in the 1840s-1890s, possibly longer. I don't know if this is the disused Holland farm that is linked to the museum? I notice there are some Holland farms still operating on Orkney. The Holland Farm the Taits lived on was at Deerness.

I've always been drawn to this strand of my family history, being someone who likes solitary places not too far from the sea that return me to myself. Orkney just seems beautiful.

I love the sound of what you're doing there, and wish you all the best with your projects. I was chuffed to find a photo of disused Holland farm. I'd love to see more photos of Deerness and the farm if you have any now or in the future.
