I’m having the day off – flies, couchsurfers, back ache

July 17, 2008 · Leave a Comment

The wind has died down – a rare occurrence here in the northern isles – so now the air feels warm, oppressive and heavy. The flies are airborne and I am reminded of life “down south”. We used to have whole summers like this – the drone of distant lawnmowers, hiding in the shade, the salty sting of sweat in the eyes and the buzzing of flies. I’d almost forgotten about that life.

Today I am resting, after a busy three days non stop, teaching survival and visiting the ancient sites of Orkney with a nice couple – the winners of Survival International raffle prize – 3 days with me – woo hoo.

I feel a bit grumpy due to straining my back while lunging for a ball this morning – and so today I am resting carefully. Met up with two really nice Couchsurfers just now – sadly we were too busy to host them but at least managed to say hello – I showed them Barnhouse village – often overlooked by tourists.

The diet continues – I’ll write it up later.

Did yoga this morning after a 3 day absence – too busy working and sleeping – and hit by hay fever – but now paying for the inactivity with an aching back. Sod’s law. Yoga felt really good too – so I am a bit pissed off.

Still, mustn’t complain. Mum is still in hospital and cannot walk – so that must be hell for her. I feel really sad for her – such a rapid loss of independence – I hope they can fix her – but hope fades with time.

Back to swatting flies and sipping rooibos.

:-)

Car Share, Lift share, Hitch-hiking, Place to stay, Freeconomy, Couchsurfing Websites in UK

June 27, 2008 · 2 Comments

The following websites allow you to share rides with others – save costs, save fuel, meet people and share conversations, get help navigating, do some good for someone! Drivers and passengers join up! Share tools, skills, places … help others and others will help you :)

In theory these could allow you to travel and stay places for no monetary cost – though you should be sharing the cost of the fuel and in homes you should be helping out, cooking and cleaning to help your hosts. Look into barter and other ways to contribute without costing the Earth.

Also consider cheaper hostel accommodation – some of which are fantastic and very clean and wonderful – some are less inspiring but the whole sector is inspected nowadays so only the odd dodgy place in a city lives up to the hostel name – think more of a self catering hotel, for under £15 a night!

I hope this helps! For specific advice about places to visit, and reviews try:

Finally, for cheap travel in UK:

for starters!

Have a good trip, stay safe, explore and learn.

Share and Save

June 7, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I belong to these websites which allow me to safely share what I have with others and in so doing help keep costs down and reduce our impact on the environment.

couchsurfing.com
liftshare.org
carshareforum.co.uk
freewheelers.co.uk

We can, of course, also benefit from these wonderfully generous people by receiving hospitality as well as giving it. Both parties should get something out of it, and put equal effort in.

They are vouched for, safe, friendly and a great way to cheaply travel, meet local people and avoid rip-offs.

I am also a big fan of hitch-hiking (which is safe in the UK) and hostel accommodation (like YHA.ORG.UK) which allows me to self cater yet move on every day. This really keeps costs down (as eating out is so expensive / not so healthy) and increases flexibility.

Try a few websites: www.virtualtourist.com and www.hostel-scotland.co.uk for inspiration about cheap eco travel. It is sociable too!
